Professional Activities and Interests
Loren Paul Rees is Arthur Andersen Professor of Business Information Technology. He received the Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering and a B.E.E. from the Georgia Institute of Technology as well as an M.S.E.E. from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He was a member of the Technical Staff of Bell Telephone Laboratories for seven years. His current teaching interests include the application of artificial intelligence concepts to business problems and the use of object-oriented programming and web-based technologies in business. Dr. Rees' current research stream focuses on nonparametric simulation optimization and the application of wireless broadband capabilities to rural and/or developing areas. He has published in Naval Research Logistics, IIE Transactions, Decision Sciences, Transportation Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Computers and Operations Research, the International Journal of Production Research, and other journals, and has monographs published by the U.S. Department of Transportation. His research on Japanese production with Drs. Huang and Taylor was the recipient of the 1984 Stanley T. Hardy Award, a national award for the greatest contribution to the field of production and operations management. Dr. Rees is a member of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), and the American Association of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). He has served as the Associate Program Chairperson for DSI and as President of the Southeastern chapter of INFORMS. He is a winner of the College Ph. D. teaching award, the MBA Outstanding Professor award, and has been named a University Outstanding Professor multiple times by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils. Dr. Rees also has received the university Wine Award for Excellence in Teaching and was inducted into the Virginia Tech Academy of Teaching Excellence.
