Professional Activities and Interests
R. Martin Jones received the M.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Science and Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the B.A. with a double major in Physics and Music from Emory & Henry College. Dr. Jones has taught a variety of courses to engineering and healthcare professionals for over 20 years while at Virginia Tech and the Medical University of South Carolina including instrumentation to mechanical engineers, operations management to healthcare providers, and decision analysis to healthcare executives.
Dr. Jones has been a principle architect and investigator on over $60M in research and development programs focused mostly on decision support systems for government and private clients. He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications with numerous technical reports and presentations. He has been the deputy director of an organization of 200 people. He has been the director of a $30M program involving faculty and staff from two universities including college deans, department chairs and medical staff. He has chaired an academic department. He has been instrumental in the start-up of seven private and public organizations.
Dr. Jones has expertise in large-scale data analysis and visualization directed towards strategic decision support. He has applied this expertise in areas as diverse as macro-level epidemiology, environmental hazards assessment, nuclear materials management, mineral exploration and, most recently, in designing an innovative approach to assessing air monitoring for detecting biological attacks.
